Mrs.Jane Woodruff Byrd, 85, died September 7, 2012 in Charlotte, NC. She was born May 3, 1927 in Phillpsburg, N. J., the younger daughter of the late William Harrison Woodruff and Florence Carty Woodruff, and spent her early years in Highland Park, N. J.
A 1949 graduate of the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Coll. of Rutgers University), Jane went on to earn her M.A. from UNC – Chapel Hill in 1952. It was there she met her husband of 59 years, Patrick N. Byrd, who survives her along with a son, Robert C. Byrd, of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas W. Byrd. Along with her family, Jane was well – traveled, with stops in Los Angeles, and Florida before settling in Hamlet in 1967. Her life-long affinity for books and learning was reflected in her professional career as Nursing School librarian at Richmond Community College.
Close friends and family will miss not only Jane’s compassion, but also the wit and intellect she lent to conversations on virtually any topic .
Carolina Cremation of Salisbury, NC is assisting the Byrd family. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinacremation.com.

I have fond memories of Jane. She was such a warm, intelligent person. It warmed my heart in recent years to encounter her and Pat at local eateries. Whenever possible, we managed to squeeze in stimulating chats on shared interests. Robert, I wish you all the best. My prayers are with you and Pat.
