A lifelong resident of Mocksville, Mrs. Shirley Baker Wall, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 11, 2013 at Davie Place in Mocksville, NC.
Shirley was the youngest of twelve children born to Artemus and Mamie Evans Baker on September 24, 1929. She was their only child delivered in the hospital in Statesville, NC. She earned her high school diploma through Davie County High School. She earned her LPN and RN degrees from Rowan Technical Community College. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Lynn Haven Nursing Home and for the V.A. Medical Center in Salisbury, from where she retired in 1993. She attended Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Mocksville, and later attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Mocksville. She loved cooking, crocheting, knitting, and traveling. Shirley regarded rock and roll music fondly, even taking her daughter and granddaughters to concerts. Her love of books was widely known, including poetry, as was her love of cats, especially Johnboy and Lucy. One of her favorite poems was “The House with Nobody in it” by Joyce Kilmer.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Walter Lee Wall. She was the last remaining of the twelve Baker children
Shirley will forever be remembered by her son, Richard Lee Wall, of Sylva, NC and her daughter, Jeanne Wall Melvin (Michael) of Concord, NC, her granddaughters Nicole Melvin of Kannapolis, NC, and Brandi Melvin-Scammell (Mark) and her great-granddaughter Eleanor Scammell (the light of her life) of Hillsborough, NC, and by countless nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Hospice, to all of the wonderful caregivers at Davie Place, to her very special roommate, Mrs. Annie Wright and Annie’s family, and to her numerous friends, neighbors, and other relatives whom she was blessed to know.
A Memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on 1304 County Home Road in Mocksville, NC on Saturday, November 23rd at 3:00pm. Interment will be at the V.A. Cemetery in Salisbury.
