Faith Farnham Kuppers died in her sleep August 6, 2016. Faith was born May 4, 1924 in Buffalo, NY, daughter of the late William H. Farnham and Doris Channell Farnham. Most of her youth was spent in the Miami area, Asheville, NC, and Ithaca, NY. She met and married her husband, James R. Kuppers at Cornell University while he was attending Naval Officers’ Training and she was obtaining a degree in English. They were married for 64 years until his death in 2008. After the war, she and her husband, who was working with the United Fruit Company, moved to Central America with their young son. Her three daughters were born there, but after 7 years the family returned to the U.S. They made their home in Gainesville, FLA, Grifton, NC, and Misenheimer, NC, finally settling in Charlotte in 1964.
Faith attended the Charlotte Friends Meeting where she was active in peace vigils and civil rights causes in the 1960’s and 1970’s. She was dedicated to women’s rights, social justice, prison reform and became an active member of the League of Women Voters. She also volunteered as a court watcher and worked with Charlotte Crisis Assistance Ministries.
Faith and her husband had many wonderful travels to Europe, Latin America and throughout North America. She was a free thinker and an avid reader involved in the founding of several book clubs. She was also known as the “Gingerbread Lady”. Until her early 80’s, Faith made it a tradition at Christmas to make gingerbread men for children at the Charlotte Friends Meeting as well as for children of family and friends. She was a wonderful baker of fresh breads and cookies. Many knew her as a worthy opponent in Scrabble.
As a wife she was patient and understanding; as a mother and grandmother she was loving, but not smothering; as a friend she was incredibly loyal. Many will miss her.
Faith is survived by sister Janet Farnham(Ossining,NY), sister-in-law Gail Farnham(Ithaca, NY), son James F. Kuppers(Ashburn, VA), daughters Kathryn C. Kuppers(Midland,NC) and Theresa K. Lanning(Oakboro,NC); grandchildren Demian Jackson; George Helms; Adrian, Seth, and Nathan Stewart; three great–grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter Mary K. Stewart and brother William M. Farnham.
Memorials can be sent to Charlotte Friends Meeting, The League of Women Voters, or Planned Parenthood. A memorial service for Faith Kuppers will be held August 20, 1 PM at the Charlotte Friends Meeting, 570 Rocky River Road West.
