Leona (Lee) Sukmanowsky Bailey, 96, of Mocksville, NC passed away at home on Sunday, September 25, 2016. She was the wife of the late Rolla Andrew Bailey, Jr. She was preceded in death by her sister Emilia S. Kirk, Jaros (Jerry) Sumner and grandson Ryan Thomas Bailey.
Leona was born on December 15, 1919 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Anthony and Julia Brzenski Sukmanowsky. A graduate of Hempstead High School, Hempstead, New York she worked in the Secretarial field for the US Gov’t retiring from the Internal Revenue Service as an executive secretary. She lived in many states while her husband was serving in the US Navy and enjoyed the travel. Leona was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter #3, District of Columbia. She enjoyed gardening and needlepoint but most of all loved her grandchildren and spending as much time with her family.
Leona is survived by one daughter: Cynthia Ann Bailey of Mocksville, NC; two sons: Rolla Andrew Bailey, III (Lynn) of Bakersfield, CA and Richard Anthony Bailey (Adriana) of Levittown, NY; six grandchildren: Shari Lee Casasola (Nick), Richard Anthony Bailey, Jr., Andrew Ryan Bailey, Vanessa Ashely Bailey, Alexis Katherine Bailey, and Julia Lee Lanzo; and three great-grandchildren: Dylan Casasola, Chase Casasola and Blake Casasola; and Gus Lanzo father of grandchild Julia Lanzo.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Wednesday August 16, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Salisbury National Cemetery (202 Government Rd., Salisbury, NC 28144).
Memorials can be made to the Rowan Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 720 Grove Street, Salisbury, NC 28144; Elizabeth and Tab Williams Day Center, 231 Melrose St. Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or a charity of your choice.
The family wants to express a special thank you to the Rowan Hospice & Palliative Care (Cynthia, Kristen, Ashley, James, Susan, Brenda and Tiffany) for the wonderful care, love, compassion and support during this time. You are a “GREAT TEAM”.
