Stephen Everett Davenport, 83, of China Grove, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2017 at his home. He was born January 26, 1934 in Halifax County, NC to the late Lester Everett Davenport and Selena Wright Davenport. He proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Steve loved his work as a city planner (AICP) and received many awards throughout his career including the Robert Reiman Professional Achievement Award. Most notable cities were Fayetteville, Raleigh, Nags Head, Mount Airy, and Greensboro where he was the Director of Planning. He then went on to work with private planning firm Benchmark and currently worked for NFocus where he helped multiple smaller cities. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching old movies, reading car magazines, and researching family genealogy. In his youth, he played baseball in high school, in college for Mars Hill, and played on the US Army team as a second baseman. He received his Bachelor degree from East Carolina. He completed two years of graduate studies at UNC.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Eloise Medlin Davenport; a sister, Flora Ann Scearce.
Steve is survived by his two sons, Derek Y Davenport and wife, Toni Zito, of Concord, NC, Jay E. Davenport and wife, Nancy, of Greensboro, NC, grandchildren; Stephen E. Davenport of Salisbury, NC, Amanda Turner and husband Dwayne of Kings Mountain, NC, and Gina Allen of Graham, NC; great grandchild; Tucker Turner and numerous and nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
