Cathy Luckey Johnson, age 69, slipped away peacefully on Saturday, September 18, 2021, after a long illness. Born in Charlotte on September 3, 1952, she was the only daughter of the late Brooks and Margaret Luckey.
Cathy attended West Mecklenburg High School, graduating in 1970. Her first job was at the laundry of her beloved grandmother, Reba Gibson, and she went on to hold various positions in sales and customer service throughout her life. Cathy met her former husband, Bayley Johnson, while they were both employees of Federal Express. During their marriage, the couple lived in Washington D.C., Memphis, TN, and Jupiter, FL.
Those who knew Cathy will remember her colorful spirit, sly sense of humor and one-of-a-kind beauty. She wore her heart on her sleeve and was deeply passionate about the things and people she loved, particularly her family. A music aficionado, Cathy knew the words to every Beatles song and was even known to flex her rapping skills at karaoke. She was a skilled chef and gourmand, from her legendary Christmas Eve hors d’oeuvres to her fabulously spicy homemade salsa. Her mastery of crossword puzzles and Trivial Pursuit was a testament to the vast knowledge she took pride and pleasure in accruing. She cherished her travels to Hawaii and Mexico, and especially loved spending time with family and friends at the beach, in the mountains and in Savannah, GA.
Cathy is survived by her daughter, Carrie J. Rodgers (Patrick) of Valatie, NY; brothers Michael B. Luckey (Patricia), R. Stephen Luckey (Janice) and K. Patrick Luckey (Wanda); nieces and nephews Julie Brandenburg, Jillian Crosby, Blakely Mack Lizotte, Robert Luckey, Hayley Mack, David Luckey and Travis Luckey; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved West Highland White Terrier, Clancy.
In accordance with her wishes, a memorial service will not be held at this time.
The family would like to extend its deep gratitude to Hospice for their attentive and compassionate care through these difficult years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 7845 Little Ave., Charlotte, NC 28226.
