David Zane Gray, 73, of Mooresville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at home surrounded by family after a 31 year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
David was born in Charleston, West Virginia to Dewey and Sue Gray, who predeceased him. He grew up in Charlotte, NC attending North Mecklenburg High School, the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and Central Piedmont Community College. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and later earned his pilot’s license and instructor rating on helicopters. David retired from Duke Energy after 30 years as an electronics technician. He traveled extensively in the USA, Asia, and Europe. In his earlier years he sought adventures – riding motorcycles, flying planes, sailing and was always ready for a party. Later, he enjoyed being on Lake Norman, watching Westerns, and, most of all, spending time with his family. Parkinson’s did not define his life. He was a gifted athlete, handyman, musician, and had a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 32 years, Carol Hoechner Gray; daughter, Megan (Will); son, Daniel (Allie); grandchild, Caroline Gray Jones; sister, Sandra Walker (Mark); nieces, Anna Beaver (Jeb) and Jenny Sauble; brother in law, Bruce Hoechner (Judy); nephews, Bryan and Bobby Hoechner; 10 great nieces and nephews; and his fur babies, Milo, Sophie, and Jasper.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on February 18, 2023 at 11 a.m. at The Brawley Estate, 601 Williams St, Mooresville. We would love for David to be remembered with stories of your friendship with him. Any attire you prefer is welcome – casual or dressy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Carolina Cremation is assisting the Gray family. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinacremation.com.
