John Peter Lopp, III passed away peacefully at his home on August 21, 2023 surrounded by family.
John was born on July 31, 1943, to the late John Peter Lopp, Jr. and Elsie Joyce Cope Lopp in Lexington, NC. John grew up on his parents’ farm and enjoyed being outside. He was president of the Central Davidson High School graduating class of 1961 and a proud member of their football team. John then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1965 with a degree in Industrial Relations. Upon graduation John enlisted in the US Army working in Army Intelligence where he was honorably discharged after earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He continued to be active in the Army Reserve and Air National Guard until 1979. After his Army discharge John began working as an Industrial Engineer for Burlington Industries and lived with his family in small towns throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Later he also worked at Highland Yard Mills, Glen Raven Mills, and Renfro before retiring in 2015. While working at Renfro John traveled monthly to Campeche, Mexico where he made many friends and enjoyed going there. John had a true talent for painting. His art adorns the walls of many of his relatives’ homes. John also enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, watching football, and, when he was able, going to local restaurants and talking with the staff there. John was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by his wife Ann Lopp who he was married to for 49 years before her passing.
John is survived by his daughters, Sissy Cassady and her husband, Michael of Salisbury; Elizabeth Freeland and her husband, Michael of Green Cove Springs, FL; and Maggie Brenseke of Salisbury; brother, Robert Lopp and wife, Linda of Lexington. He is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher Cassady and fiancée, Hannah Murphy, Katie Cassady and husband Dillon Bentley, Mackenzie Brenseke, Madelyne Brenseke, and Hannah Freeland.
The family would like to thank Dr. Terry Arnold for the excellent care given to our father.
There will be a private memorial service held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292 or the memorial of their choice. Carolina Cremation is assisting the Lopp family. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinacremation.com.
