On October 10, 2023, Ronald Lee Massey, devoted husband and loving father and grandfather, died
peacefully at home after an extended hospitalization at the age of 75.
Ronnie was born on November 5, 1947, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Empson Thomas Massey and Christine
Firebaugh Massey. He graduated from William Fleming High School and served as Class President in
1966.
He began his 38 year career in banking as an auditor with First National Exchange Bank in 1970. He graduated from banking schools at both the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin. After completing several successful bank mergers, he retired from Wachovia Bank in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Operations.
In 1988, while working for Dominion Bankshares, he accepted an appointment to the Roanoke County
Planning Commission. He eventually served as Chairman prior to his transfer to Charlotte due to the
First Union merger. He was a proud Roanoker and honored to serve his hometown.
Upon retirement, he came home to the farm in Salisbury, North Carolina. He enjoyed working with his
tractors, loving on the ponies and planting turnip greens and pumpkins. Restoring their award-winning
1940 Buick Special Eight was also a passion project. Like his father, he also excelled at woodworking and
made many treasured pieces for his children and grandchildren through the years.
Ronnie was predeceased by his father, Empson Thomas, and his mother, Christine Firebaugh Massey, as
well as his older brother, Wayne Thomas Massey.
He is survived by his dedicated and loving wife of 53 years Carole Angle Massey as well as his son Ronald Lee Massey II (Kathleen) of Southlake, Texas, and daughter Katherine Anne Massey of High Point, North Carolina. He is also survived by his younger (but not nearly as handsome) brother Donald Massey of Davidson, North Carolina, bonus son Christopher Cox of High Point, North Carolina, sister-in-law Sharon Angle of Staunton, Virginia, and brother-in-law Kim Angle of Eagle Rock, Virginia.
Ronnie adored his grandchildren near and far. He never passed up an opportunity to talk with them
about school, dance or ball games. He enjoyed teaching them new things – especially target shooting off
the front porch and learning to drive in the Gator. His legacy will live on through Griffin Anderson and
Spencer Anne Massey of Southlake, Texas, and Margaret Christine and Henry Thomas Cox of High Point, North Carolina.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate and dedicated caregivers
of Trellis Supportive Care along with Ms. Tonya Burts who became a treasured family friend.
The family suggests honoring the memory of Ronnie by sending a contribution to either the Virginia
Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia, (vmt.org) or the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina, (nctransportationmuseum.org) in his name.
A private interment will be held in Roanoke at a later date.
Carolina Cremation is assisting the Massey family. Online condolences may be may be at www.carolinacremation.com.

Carol and family, I was shocked to hear that Ronnie had passed away. I have many happy memories of growing up with the Massey boys including sleepovers and attending their little league games. You all are in my prayers
Al Nichols says
So sorry to hear this news Carole. I really enjoyed working with Ronnie over many years starting in 1973. I know he was happy on the farm and I looked forward to the interesting stories – like the bee infestation! I missed the Corvette stories – I’m sure he really enjoyed those cars too.
