Kenneth Muir of Mint Hill died on April 27, 2024 after a long illness. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Ken was born in Portland, Oregon in 1943. Ken’s father was a soldier overseas in North Africa, serving in World War II at the time of his birth.
Ken lived most of his early life in Cedar Grove and Glen Ridge, NJ. He attended Harding College in Arkansas and then Montclair State College in New Jersey. He earned a Master’s degree in history at Rutgers University and later a high school principal’s certificate at Montclair State.
Ken spent thirty years as a social studies teacher and administrator at two NJ high schools, Verona, and Mountain Lakes. Teaching was a calling he loved, and Ken was a nominee for the Princeton University Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching, the National Teacher Hall of Fame, and the National Unsung Heroes Award.
In 1996, Ken relocated to Charlotte and taught at Garinger High School. In 1999, his students selected him as Garinger Teacher of the Year and Time-Warner Star Teacher.
In retirement, Ken continued giving of himself, assisting his two children in renovating and restoring four older homes, and lending his skill at all forms of restoration work. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his wife, two children, and four grandchildren. Ken always said that his wife, his childhood sweetheart, was the key to his joy and success in life, and for over 56 years, they walked together, bowled together and were an incredible team in work and play.
Carolina Cremation is honored to serve the Muir family. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinacremation.com.
