Larry Sterling McAlpine, age 70, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House – Southminster in Charlotte.
Born on December 26, 1953, in Gaston County, NC, Larry was the son of the late George and Jenny Johnson McAlpine. He was a proud graduate of South Point High School in Belmont and worked as an Arborist for AAA Tree Expert for many years.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, George & Jenny, grandmother McAlpine, and his beloved great-grandmother, Jenny Johnson.
He is survived by his daughters: Sarah McAlpine Miranda (George IV and Penny) of Charlotte, NC; Laney Llewellyn (Henley and Boxley) of Charlotte, NC; Magdalynn McAlpine of Charlotte, NC; Heather McAlpine Ray (Cole, Kendall and Kara) of Belmont, NC; and Jessica Dimmer (Cameron) of Belmont, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren: George Miranda IV, Penelope Miranda, Henley Llewellyn, Boxley Llewellyn, Cole Haller, Kendall Robbins, Kara Robbins, and Cameron Martin. Larry is further survived by his only sister, Valerie McAlpine Kokenes, her daughter, Stephanie Kokenes Tsahakis, and her children; and his ex-wife Lynn McAlpine.
Larry’s legacy is marked not only by his career but by his profound impact on the lives of those around him. A dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 35 years, Larry found support, camaraderie, and a second family through the fellowship. His commitment to helping others and his own personal recovery was a testament to his strength and resilience. Those who knew him will remember his boundless love for his family—“with all his heart,” as he often said—and his unwavering loyalty and support.
A memorial service to celebrate Larry’s life will be held at Providence United Methodist Church at a date and time to be determined.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House or the Alcoholics Anonymous Foundation.
Larry will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the joy he brought into the lives of his loved ones and the example of strength and compassion he set for all who knew him.
