Elaine Queen Potts, a woman of bold conviction and boundless courage, passed away on December 17th, 2024. She was a force of nature—brave, deeply faithful, and unafraid to stand for justice when it mattered most. A connector of people and a defender of her community, Elaine’s life was a testament to the power of living with purpose and grace.

Elaine was an educator, a speaker, a writer, and a trailblazer. She taught in community colleges, prisons, churches, and through non-profit work, touching countless lives with her wisdom. Her voice carried across borders, speaking in countries around the globe, inspiring multitudes to think deeply and live fully. She had an extraordinary gift for seeing the heart of an issue and addressing it with unwavering clarity. Her legacy lives on in the hundreds, if not thousands, she taught, mentored, and inspired. To know her was to witness a life that illuminated the path for others.

Born on January 23rd, 1956, to Evelyn and Clyde Queen, Elaine embodied strength and love throughout her life. Just this year, she celebrated her 40th anniversary with her beloved husband, Bruce. Together, they built a family rooted in love and learning. Elaine poured herself fully into raising her two children, Joanna and Stephen, giving them the greatest gift of her unwavering love and countless sacrifices. She devoted herself to nurturing their dreams, guiding them with wisdom and strength, and always putting their needs before hers. She welcomed her son-in-law, Jon, as one of her own with open arms and an open heart.

Elaine’s circle of love extended far beyond immediate family. She is survived by her loving sister Tammy Hill (Barry), her dear brother Rick Queen (Shannon), and her baby sister Penny Lefler (Mick). She also held in her heart the memories of her late siblings: Randy Queen, Renee Long, and Laura Queen. Her nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and extended family were all part of her tapestry of connection. Each relationship was unique and valued, a reflection of Elaine’s profound ability to make everyone feel seen and loved.

Elaine’s life will be celebrated as she lived—with joy, gratitude, and togetherness. A celebration of her incredible life will be held at 11 a.m. on December 28th, at First Ministries Center (the Old YMCA) on Fulton Street. Please join us to honor this remarkable woman and the legacy she leaves behind. A barbecue lunch will follow, as Elaine would have wanted: a gathering of people, stories, and love.
