DONALD EMERY WALLACE, 86, KOREAN WAR COMBAT WOUNDED MARINE HERO, OF WINSTON-SALEM, NC, PASSED AWAY ON MEMORIAL DAY AT THE VA HOSPICE HOME IN SALISBURY AND HAS GONE TO LIVE WITH HIS HEAVENLY FATHER AS HE WAS A CHILD OF GOD.
HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY A SON, FRANK ALAN WALLACE; HIS PARENTS, LOUISE AND GEORGE WALLACE, AND SISTER, JOAN WALLACE WILSON.
HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE OF 32 YEARS, GEORGIA WILCOX WALLACE; TWO SONS, STEVE (NANCY) OF NORFOLK, VA.; PETE OF TAYLORSVILLE, NC; TWO DAUGHTERS, DONNA (ATUL)OF HUNTERSVILLE, NC; DEBBIE (PAUL) OF CLEMMONS, NC; TWO STEPSONS, MICHAEL MATHENY OF WINSTON-SALEM, NC AND BRIAN MATHENY OF LEWISVILLE, NC.; SEVEN GRANDCHILDREN, STAN (MEREDITH), KATIE (MATT), BRIANNA, CLARISSA, DYLAN, GRACYN, MALLORY; TWO GREAT GRANDCHILDREN, COLBIE AND ELEANOR. DON WAS VERY PROUD OF HIS FAMILY AND LOVED THEM VERY MUCH.
DON WAS BORN IN NORWOOD, MASSACHUSETTS TO GEORGE AND LOUISE WALLACE. HE MOVED TO PINEHURST, NC, IN 1935 AND ATTENDED SCHOOL THERE. GROWING UP IN PINEHURST HE BECAME AN EXCELLENT GOLFER. HIS BEST FRIEND WAS PETE TUFFS WHOSE FAMILY DEVELOPED AND OWNED PINEHURST. HE AND HIS WIFE ENJOYED MANY YEARS PLAYING GOLF. IN 1947 HE MOVED TO ROANOKE, VA. JOINED THE MARINE CORPS RESERVES AND GRADUATED FROM JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL. IN 1948 HE ENROLLED IN ROANOKE COLLEGE IN SALEM, VA. IN 1950 HE WAS ACTIVATED INTO THE USMC AND REPORTED TO THE 1-1-1 (1ST BATTALION, 1ST MARINE REGIMENT, 1ST MARINE DIVISION, FOR ACTIVE COMBAT DUTY IN KOREA DURING 1951-1952, WHERE AS SERGEANT HE WAS WOUNDED FROM A MORTAR BURST EARNING HIM THE PURPLE HEART MEDAL AND OTHER COMBAT MEDALS. DON WAS VERY PROUD OF THE MARINE BROTHERHOOD AND HIS SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. AFTER SERVING THE MARINES, HE RETURNED TO ROANOKE COLLEGE IN 1952 GRADUATING IN 1955. HE TAUGHT SCHOOL IN ROANOKE AND THEN JOINED IBM SALES IN 1956. IN 1968 HE JOINED CAROLINA RIBBON CORP. IN SALES AND RETIRED IN 1996. DON WAS A CHARTER MEMBER OF THE MILITARY ORDER OF PURPLE HEART WHERE HE SERVED AS AN OFFICER. HE SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF THE PIEDMONT CIVITAN CLUB. FOR YEARS HE ENJOYED HIS “DAILY” LUNCHES AT MAYBERRY’S ON STRATFORD ROAD AND TIME SPENT THERE WITH FRIENDS. HE HAD A GOD GIVEN TALENT FOR ART AND PROVIDED MANY WONDERFUL DRAWINGS FOR FAMILY, FRIENDS AND HIS CHURCH, MAPLE SPRINGS UNITED METHODIST.
THE FAMILY WOULD LIKE TO GRATEFULLY THANK THE VA HOSPICE HOME IN SALISBURY FOR THEIR EXCELLENT HOSPITALITY AND CARE.
A BURIAL SERVICE WITH FULL MILITARY HONORS WILL BE HELD AT THE SALISBURY VA NATIONAL CEMETERY, 202 GOVERNMENT AVENUE, AT 10:00 AM ON TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 2017. A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD ON JUNE 6, 2017 AT 2:00 PM AT MAPLE SPRINGS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 2569 REYNOLDA ROAD, WINSTON-SALEM, NC, 27106. A RECEPTION WILL FOLLOW IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL.
