Harold Reid Fisher, 81, went home to his Lord and Savior on October 30 after a five-year battle with cancer. The son of the late H. V. and Marie Fisher, Harold was born in April 1935 in Cramerton. He was a graduate of Cramerton High School. In October 1958, he was drafted into the United States Army as an infantryman.During his 20-year career in the U.S. Army, he was commissioned as an officer, completed fixed-wing and rotor-wing flight training and became a pilot of UH-1 helicopters.
Among many other overseas and stateside assignments, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam, with D Troop (Air), 3rd Sqd., 4th Cavalry Div. in 1967 and with B Co., 227 Avn. Bn, 1st Cavalry Div. in 1970-’71, as a UH-1 pilot and unit commander.During his tours in Vietnam, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal (three awards), the Purple Heart and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1978 as a lieutenant colonel. He moved with his family to Gastonia in 1980, during which time he worked as a purchasing manager for Homelite Corp.
In 1989, the Fisher family relocated to Rockwell, where Harold worked for several local firms before ultimately retiring in 2011. For 23 years, Harold was an active member of Midway United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, where he was a Sunday school teacher and member of the choir. He was also a past board member of Opportunity House in Kannapolis and a volunteer in the Kannapolis City Schools.
In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife, the late Susan Hensley Fisher.
He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Hugh Fisher of Irving, Texas and Justin and Malorie Fisher of Granite Quarry; and two grandsons.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Midway United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 708 S. Main St., Kannapolis.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Midway United Methodist Church, the Rev. Michael Collins and the Rev. Dave Cash officiating.
Graveside committal service will follow Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 S. New Hope Rd., Gastonia, with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the general fund of Midway United Methodist Church.
