James Calvert Scott III, affectionately known as “Chicago,” passed away on March 31, 2025, at the age of 80. He was born on July 26, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, and made his home in Salisbury, North Carolina.
James proudly served his country as a Vietnam Veteran. He began his working life with Davie Tree before spending the majority of his career at Carolina Builders. After retiring from there, he worked as a maintenance worker and animal caretaker at Dan Nicholas Park.
He had a passion for motorcycles, fishing, and NASCAR, and he never missed an opportunity to strike up a conversation—especially with a pretty lady. In retirement, he stayed active with yard work, power tools, and time spent with his beloved dog Zeus, who he spoiled completely. James was known for taking people in during hard times and offering help when it mattered most. His actions spoke louder than words, and he showed his care simply by being there.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Calvert Scott Jr. and Elizabeth “Betty” Alamsha Scott.
James is survived by his children: Damon Scott, Chris Scott, Justin Scott, and Shannon Ruffing; his sisters, Barbara Morales and Carol McBride; and his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Powles Staton Funeral Home Chapel, located at 913 W. Main St., Rockwell, NC 28138.
