On Wednesday October 11, 2023, Martha Baker passed away peacefully at 87 at The Pines in Davidson, NC. During her stay she was constantly surrounded by friends, loved ones, and fellow Christians.
Throughout her life, Martha was a sister, a student, a nurse, an educator, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a friend.
Martha was born in Rowan County. She grew up with her sister, Audrey Smith and brothers, T. B. and Lonnie Karriker. At a young age Martha knew she wanted to be a nurse.
After graduating from Landis High School, Martha attended Charlotte Memorial School of Nursing; she graduated as a Registered Nurse and later earned a Bachelor of Science during her professional nursing career. While nursing, Martha worked at the VA Hospital in Salisbury, as Director of Nurses at The Lutheran Home, as Assistant Director of Nurses at Huntersville Oaks, and as a Parish Nurse for First Methodist Church in China Grove. During her career, Martha continued to learn, earned several nursing certifications and degrees, mentored younger staff members, and taught several nursing courses.
In retirement, she continued to serve her community, volunteered her time, and was active in her local chapter of SmartStart serving on the Board of Directors. Martha was a lifelong member of Concordia Lutheran Church where she taught several Bible studies and was a leader in small group sessions. While at The Pines, Martha continued a life of service; she led Bible studies, was active on the Welcome Committee, and was instrumental in starting the Chaplaincy Program.
Martha met Joe Baker while nursing. He first asked her out with an “RC Cola and Moon Pie.” Together, they celebrated 50 years of marriage and raised two daughters: Becky Floyd and Beth Jackson. Joe Baker passed away in 2008 preceding Martha. Becky married Bart Floyd. Beth married Joe Jackson. Martha had three grandchildren: Hogan Floyd, Ruth Jackson, and JJ Jackson.
Martha Baker was dedicated to serving her community, her church, her family, her friends, and her faith. She lived a full life, raised a Christian family, and was an inspiration to those around her.
She is survived by her brother, Rev. Lonnie Karriker, her daughters Becky and Beth as well as their families, and in the lives of those she touched through her service.
A special thank you to Howard W. Smith for his love and care for Martha.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 4th at 2:00 PM at Concordia Lutheran Church in China Grove, NC. Martha’s life will be celebrated and remembered. A family visitation will take place following the memorial service.
