Martha Nelle Powell Yergin

Share

Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.

Martha Nelle Powell Yergin, 94, of Rock Hill, SC passed away on Thursday May 7, 2015 at the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC. Martha was born on February 06, 1921 in Hartwell, Georgia to the late Leonard Powell and Myra Powell. She proudly served her country in the United States Army Air Corps as a Nurse during World War II. She was stationed in Egypt where she met her future husband who was also serving in the US Army.

She was of the Presbyterian faith and was a Sunday school teacher as well. She enjoyed gardening, decorating, and was an avid portrait painter. Martha would paint portraits for all of her family and friends. Once her children were grown, she enjoyed traveling all over the world with her husband for his job in the oil industry. Martha even secretly learned how to play golf and surprised her husband on his return from a business trip. More than anything, she loved being a Mother, Wife, and Grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Vernon Yergin; a son, John Leonard Yergin; and nine brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a son, William Yergin and wife Diana of Chesterland, Ohio; a daughter, Linda Ruth Nesbit and husband Sam of Hillsborough, NC; two brothers, Jimmy Powell and Dan Powell; a sister, Polly Dunston; seven grandchildren, Christina Harris and husband Joe, Bethany Henshall and husband Geoff, Karyn Nesbit and husband Josh Horton, Lindsay Romito, Chelsea Gajadhar and husband Jermey, Courtney Yergin, and Mareike Yergin; and seven great grandchildren, Allie Madison Henshall, Caiden Matthew Henshall, Wyatt Samuel Harris, Rook Romito, Cirren “CJ” Romito, Lillian “Lilly” Gajadhar, and Madilyn Pack.

The family will have a private graveside service at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, (P.O.Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309).
