Mildred “Millie” Shelton, 100, of Thomasville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington, North Carolina, due to natural causes.
Born on July 20, 1926, in Newport News, Virginia, Millie was the daughter of the late George Bassett and Eunice Bridges Bassett. Over the course of her remarkable 100 years, she lived a life filled with adventure, laughter, love, and a spirit that refused to let age slow her down.
Millie truly believed in living life to the fullest. In a testament to her extraordinary zest for life, Millie celebrated her 100th birthday in grand style by going skydiving for the third time! That was Millie-a woman who didn’t just count her years; she made every year count. Her adventurous spirit and enthusiasm for life will long be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Millie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ferrell “Popi” Shelton.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Michele (Joe) Sokol of Buena Park, California; grandsons, Wade (Mel) Sokol of North Carolina and Paul Sokol of California; great-grandsons, Christian (Michelle) Sokol of Utah and Sean Sokol of North Carolina; great-granddaughter, Stella Sokol of North Carolina; and sisters, Mary Foley of South Carolina, Barbara (Larry) Kinley of North Carolina, and Bonnie Colbert of North Carolina.
Millie’s life was a beautiful reminder that adventure has no age limit, laughter keeps the heart young, and the best way to live is with courage, curiosity, and an open heart. Though she will be deeply missed, her family and friends can take comfort in knowing that her remarkable spirit, unforgettable stories, and love of life will live on in the generations she leaves behind.
A Celebration of Life honoring Millie and her extraordinary journey will be held in 2027. Details will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alderwood Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292 or to Meals on Wheels of Lexington, 11 Vance Street Lexington, NC 27292.
