Following an extended illness, Milton Deane Young, age 55, died September 18, 2015, at Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury, NC.
Mr. Young, born July 24, 1960, in Asheville, was the son of The Rev. Mr. C. Milton and Margaret W. Young.
He is survived by his parents, his wife Connie Carter, brothers Charles W. and Drayten E. Young, sister-in-law Carol Keck, nephews Adam Vernon-Young, Nathan C. Young, Jacob and Caleb Isaacson, and loving and supportive extended family and friends.
A graduate of Freedom High School in Morganton, NC, Mr. Young attended Brevard College and
received his BS in Forestry Management from the University of Tennessee School of Forestry. He enjoyed the outdoors, and during college he was a student volunteer fire fighter in Pisgah Forest. He spent a summer working with the Forest Service in Idaho and in Mt. Rainier National Park.
He also organized and co-led back packing trips into the Rockies and the northern part of the Appalachian Trail. Active in Boy Scouts, he took leadership roles in summer programs at Camp Bud Schiele in Rutherford County, including creating a forestry management plan for the camp as part of his college senior studies.
Following graduation, Mr. Young worked briefly with Weyerhaeuser in Eastern NC before returning to the mountains to work with the Cherokee County Soil Conservation District, while in his spare time helping to care for his aging grandfather. Following his grandfather’s death, Mr. Young moved to Winston-Salem and worked for 23 years as Environmental Specialist with Forsyth County Air Quality Control.
Mr. Young was committed to helping others, evident in his participation in programs of the various churches his father served, and, as President of the UT Wesley Foundation, the student work teams he organized to work in low income areas in Knoxville. Later he used vacation time to work with WNC Conf. United Methodist Building Teams in the Caribbean. Very sensitive to others, he helped both friends and strangers when they needed assistance or an understanding listener.
The memorial service will be at Bald Creek United Methodist Church, Bald Creek, NC, October 3rd, 2015 at 2 PM.
