Paul Lindsey Darr, Jr., 69, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at VA Hospice in Salisbury after several months of declining health. We rejoice now that he no longer suffers and is residing in Glory with his Lord and Savior, and beloved family members who preceded him in death. Paul was born on July 30, 1955 to the late Rev. Paul L Darr, Sr. and the late Margaret Miller Darr in Mooresville, NC. Rev. Darr was a Church of God minister who worked and resided in many North Carolina towns and cities during Paul Jr.’s school years, including Canton, Cherryville, Goldsboro, Kinston, and Ramseur.
Upon graduating from Kinston High School in 1973, Paul joined the United States Army serving for 3 years. Most of that time he was stationed in Germany, earning the National Defense Service Medal. Once Paul returned home, he attended Rowan Technical Institute
in Salisbury, utilizing the GI Bill benefit.
In 1977 Paul met Rene Barger whom he married in 1980. They share a son, River Barrett Darr. Paul spent the larger part of his machinist career employed with Ronson Hydraulics in Charlotte, making hydraulic parts for aircraft. In his younger years, for fun and relaxation Paul enjoyed watching all sports on TV, camping, riding his motorcycle, and taking canoe trips on the New River. A continuous source of aggravation for him, however, was watching his Minnesota Vikings football team lose, which they did often! Later in life Paul enjoyed perusing various flea markets and yard sales searching for that “great find!” He liked to look for and collect all sizes of treasure chests, and various men’s hats. Paul was an avid country music fan his entire life.
In his later years Paul loved to sit on his front porch either swinging on the swing or rocking in the rocking chair enjoying the day with his adopted cat, Sylvester.
Paul was preceded in death by his grandparents: Margaret and George Miller, and Frances and Troy Darr, parents, Paul, Sr. and Margaret Darr, and sister, Kathy Darr James.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, River Darr, daughter-in-law, Carson Bridges Darr, niece, Tina Wilson, nephew, Jonathan Wilson, great nephew, Chase Wilson, great niece, Anna Wilson, ex-wife Rene Barger, ex-wife Donna Roach.
A memorial service will be held at the shelter in the National Cemetery located on Statesville Blvd., at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 6, 2024, with the Rev. David Thurman (close friend of Paul’s) officiating. Following the service, you are invited to join the family for a “Dutch Treat” meal and fellowship, followed by a trip to Paul’s house to sprinkle some of his ashes around his maple tree. Location of the meal will be announced later.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Paul’s memory, to the Dementia Society of America at www.DementiaSociety.org/donate, or to the VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC at https://www.va.gov/salisbury-health-care/work-with-us/volunteer-or-donate/
