Walter Cabell Echols, Jr., 81, of Cornelius, passed away November 24 in the Tucker Hospice House surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Greensboro, NC to the late Walter Cabell and Helen Fulp Echols. Following graduation from Guilford College, he moved briefly to Atlanta, GA before moving to Charlotte where he lived the rest of this life. Walt was beloved by his neighbors, co-workers, and, most importantly, his family. Fishing was his passion, primarily from piers along the North and South Carolina coasts. He loved everything about the sea and his consumption of seafood would be measured by the ton! He spent his career as a salesman in the trucking industry. This gave him the opportunity to indulge in another passion, traveling the back roads of the South. He never missed the opportunity to stop in to a country store and sample the local delicacies.
Walt was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and stepson Alan O’Bryan.
He is survived by his sons, Scott (Pauline) and David (Cathy); daughter, Jennifer (Adrian Holbrook); grandchildren, Fletcher, Sarah, Cameron, and Annie Echols; stepdaughter, Renee (Hal Riordan); stepson, Jeff O’Bryan (Julie); and step-grandchildren, Amanda and Patrick Riordan and Kyle and Katie O’Bryan.
The family will have a private remembrance of Walt’s life.
Remembrances may be made to the NC Wildlife Federation.
Carolina Cremation of Charlotte & Salisbury is assisting the Echols family. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinacremation.com.
