Obituary for Gerard (Jerry) Joseph VanDagna, Vietnam War Veteran (1967-1969)
It is with deep sadness and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of Jerry, a devoted member of the United States Army 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles who served his country during the Vietnam War. Jerry passed away on November 21, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of courage, selflessness, and unwavering dedication.
Jerry served honorably in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969, where he earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Parachutist Badge, Army Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. As a young man, he answered the call to serve during one of the most tumultuous periods in our nation’s history. He was a vital part of the military effort, exhibiting resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The sacrifices he made during his service have shaped his life and the lives of those who knew him.
Following his service, Jerry returned home to New York, where he married and moved to North Carolina. This is where Jerry called home. He went on to lead a full life. He was a veteran supporter, attending reunions and supporting fellow veterans, always staying connected to the brotherhood of those who had shared in the hardships of war.
He is survived by his wife, Marion, daughters; Randi Glasgow and Roxanne Plateroti, siblings; Barbara Steckman, Jeff Silverman, Jan and Lenny, grandchildren; Alexis, Louis, Isabella, J.J. and Madison.
Jerry was known for his love of animals and riding his motorcycle. His family will cherish the memories of the time they shared with him.
A military honors service will be held on December 13, 2024 10:00am, at Salisbury National Cemetery. Jerry’s family invites all who knew him to join in honoring his memory and the sacrifices he made for his country.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations a Veteran Organization or Charity.
Jerry will be remembered as a hero, not just for his service in Vietnam, but for the love and kindness he showed to all who crossed his path. His legacy of bravery, integrity, and commitment to service will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
May he rest in peace.
