Charles Edward Whitesides, 80, of Lexington, ended his 5 year battle with Alzheimers on April 30, 2017. Charles was born on February 28, 1937, in Gastonia, NC to the late Catherine Stroupe Whitesides and Clarence Whitesides. He attended NC State College before enlisting in the United States Air Force, serving for four years and working as an aircraft mechanic.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lexington and his career included time in real estate, as well as time with Duke Energy and Lowes Home Improvement. Charles loved fishing, gardening, and doing mission work and now he is in heaven where he can remember how.
He is survived by his wife and fishing companion of over 30 years, Susan Whitesides; daughter, Kim Matheis (Phil) of Lenoir; sons, David Broach (Kathryn), and Derik Broach (Sarah) both of Greensboro; grandchildren, Jeremy Williams, Kathrine Green, Cassie Matheis, Caden Whitesides, Rick Broach, Elijah Broach, and Dixon Broach; sister, Linda Stapleton of Gastonia; brother, Robert Whitesides (Brenda) of Edisto Beach, SC; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, Curtis Whitesides; a brother, Raymond Whitesides; and a brother-in-law, Richard Stapleton.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday May 7, 2017 at 3:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Lexington (300 South Main St., Lexington, NC 27292) conducted by Dr. Lee Zehmer and Dr. Robert Evans III. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County (200 hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292) or to First Presbyterian Church of Lexington Youth Missions (P.O.Box 586, Lexington, NC 27292).
