Charles Penny Hinnant, 94 of Durham passed away on May 9, 2017 at his home in Durham.
Visitation will be held at the home on Friday May 12 from 5-7pm.
A memorial service will be held at Yates Baptist Church on Saturday May 27, 2017 at 11:00am with Reverends Christopher Ingram and John Frederick officiating. There will be a private committal service held with family to take his ashes to his home place in Garner, NC.
Charles Penny Hinnant was born in Garner, NC to Claude Bernard and Juanita Ellis Hinnant on July 17, 1922. He went to high school at Garner High School and attended Chowan College, North Carolina State University and finished his academic career while in the United States Navy. He worked as an engineer for the State of North Carolina Division of Highways and retired in 1977 after a long career with the Water and Sewer Department of Durham, NC. After retirement he started a new career by owning and operating Hinnant Surveying in Durham. He enjoyed eating barbeque, going to watch the Durham Bulls, working in his garden, and loved his family and thoroughly loved his NC State Wolfpack.
Charles Hinnant is preceded in death by his two sons, Francis (Frank) Boyette Hinnant and Charles (Chuck) Ellis Hinnant. He also is preceded in death by sisters Mildred Walston, Jewel Hayes, Bessie Lee Smith, Irma Bryon and brother, Graham (Dusty) Hinnant.
Charles is survived by his wife of 72 years, Frances Chitty Hinnant. He is also survived by his son, Dan Bernard Hinnant (Marilyn) of Arizona and his daughter, Penny Hinnant Bowman (Roger) of Virginia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Matt Hinnant (Kristi), Andy Hinnant (Anna), Jamie Hinnant Hill (Benjamin), Scott Hinnant (Kimber), Drew Bowman, Daman Bowman and Lori Hinnant Sigal. Mr. Hinnant is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
