Charles Thomas “Tom” Wolpert, an Alliance, Ohio native, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025 in Salisbury, North Carolina.
Tom was born October 3, 1938 to Charles Joseph and Betty Jewel (Long) Wolpert. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Mitchell Lewis Wolpert, as well as best friend, Joe Lancione. Tom is survived by his sister, Sally Ann Huth, brother, David Scott (Debby) Wolpert, nephew, Andrew Wolpert, niece, Melissa (Shawn) Eaton, and daughter, Victoria. His great-nephews, Trent and Calvin Wolpert, and Grant and Alec Eaton were a source of pride. “Uncle Tom” enjoyed hearing about their many activities and accomplishments. Tom was also surrounded by loving, generous and compassionate neighbors in Salisbury.
Tom graduated from Alliance High School in 1956 and Mount Union College in 1961. He earned his master’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and doctorate from Boston University.
Tom’s gift was using his humor and creativity in his love of teaching. His teaching career began at Liberty Elementary School in Alliance, Ohio, before taking a teaching assignment in El Salvadore, Chile, and then returning to a two- room school in Jackson, New Hampshire. He became a teacher of teachers serving as a Professor of Education for several years at Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts. During that time, he travelled the world leading workshops at American Schools and Embassies, teaching children and other teachers the importance of reading. Also at that time, Tom was an author for Harper & Row Publishers, writing many children’s books to be used in elementary classrooms.
After retiring from Bridgewater State, Tom relocated to Salisbury where he owned and operated a specialty gift shop named A Step In Time. He was completely immersed in the community-from the Salisbury Symphony, to neighborhood block parties, to volunteering with senior organizations. Tom was truly a “people” person with boundless energy and enthusiasm, who lived life to the fullest. He will be missed.
