Charlie Robertson Walters passed away suddenly on August 31, 2022.
A Salisbury native, Charlie was born on July 4, 1935 to the late S. Johnson and Sally Roof Walters and was the youngest of six children.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Suzanne Kress Walters and is survived by his daughters, Allison Walters Merriman (Jim) of Charlotte and Jocelyn Marie Walters of Black Mountain; son, Kress Robertson Walters of Charlotte; grandsons, Spencer Robertson Hayes and Jackson David Hayes, both of Asheville, NC and his faithful sidekick, Abby the Boston Terrier.
Charlie was a 1953 graduate of Boyden High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation. After serving, he attended Clemson University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing. He enjoyed a long and successful career in sales and realized his dream of establishing his own business, North State Tile, which he managed along with Kress and Jocelyn for 13 years before retiring. He was a Rowan County Commissioner from 1966 – 1976 and was proud of the contributions he made to the community, particularly the development of Dan Nicholas Park.
Charlie and his wife Suzie had many common interests; they were both talented and creative and always had a project in the works. He was inspired by wanderlust and he and Suzie traveled the world together.
Charlie had a natural way with people and not only made friends easily but kept and cherished those friendships throughout the years. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He lived a full and generous life and was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, mentor and friend. He was loved by many and will be missed.
We will celebrate his life with a service on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County, P.O.Box 3356, Salisbury, NC 28145-3356 and Bell Tower Green Inc., P.O. Box 4242, Salisbury, NC, 28145-4242.
