Cheryl “Sherry” Wright Nelson, 80, of Lake Wylie, SC, passed away peacefully at her home on October 18, 2025. She was a wife, big sister, aunt and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Sherry, originally from Knoxville, TN, was the oldest of five siblings. She graduated from East High School in 1963 where she had begun dating her high school sweetheart, Jay. They were married in 1968 after both graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Sherry and Jay lived and worked in several areas, including Tunkhannock, PA, Mobile, AL, Columbia, SC, St. Petersburg, FL and Lake Wyle, SC. At these locations, Sherry found job opportunities for teaching so many different age groups: Pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, elementary, junior high and adult education. She immediately joined classes, taught classes, volunteered in community endeavors and taught Sunday school. With an artistic and creative mind, she used her special talents to maximize her enjoyment of painting, sculpting and handcrafting. She generously and selflessly shared her artistic treasures with those who knew her. Along with her artistic passions, some of her additional hobbies included playing racquetball, running, reading and spoiling her many “furry” friends over the years. No matter where she lived, Sherry was a welcoming hostess and enjoyed sharing her home and many dinners with friends and relatives.
Sherry was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Dorothy Wright of Knoxville, TN; her siblings Patti Wright Varnell (Charles) of Greeneville, TN; Robert Lee Wright (Susan)of Huntsville, AL; and David Wright (Shirley) of Dungannon, VA.
Sherry leaves behind Jay, her husband of 57 years; brother Philip Wright of Knoxville,TN; brother-in-law Steve Nelson (Melanie) of Memphis, TN; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of Sherry’s life will be held at 2pm, Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Community Church of Lake Wylie.
