Dear Hummel Families, and friends , I’m so very sorry for the loss of David, I can’t say that as an adult that I stayed in contact with him, but I know he was a great man. I may only tell of the David that was like a second brother to me, growing up with him being at my house with my brother Rich, or me being at his house with him and his brothers, Eric and Steve and sister Laura and all the puppies, kittens, and baby chicks that I adored so much. All the Birthday parties and snowmobiling memories were all great. May God be with you all at this very hard time and may you Rest in Peace David. God Bless… You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so heartbroken to hear this News. Coach Hummel was my throwing coach at Dickinson in 2007. I just saw and spoke with him in October 2017, at homecoming weekend. We talked about life and how his children had grown from when we last spoke in 2007. He was a tremendous person with an enormous heart. He will live on, as all good inspirational people do. I will tell my children about his spirit, his passion, and his enduring commitment to others!

In the Fall of 1999 my eldest son was a high school senior and as such he and I spent many weekends visiting prospective colleges. As a distance runner, he and I were looking forward to meeting the track coach and the cross country coach during our visit to Dickinson College. We were greeted by a broad smile and friendly handshake–Dave Hummel. He apologized to us on behalf of the college saying that the head T&F coaching position had recently become vacant and the cross country coach was out of state at a meet, but he was glad to meet us and would pass along that we had attended the open house. My son ultimately became a Dickinson athlete and would often times tell my wife and me of the picnics Dave threw at his home for all of the track athletes. We spoke many times over the years and Dave clearly exhibited his genuine interest and concern not just for his throwers, but for all of the track athletes. Dave would joke that my son was the best runner he had “recruited”. I feel blessed to have met Dave and am deeply saddened by his passing.

I joined the Dickinson track team in 1998. Even though I was part of the distance runners, Coach Hummel always showed an interest in my training, performance, and most importantly my life. That continued well beyond my Dickinson years as Coach Hummel followed my life via Facebook. I will always remember his friendly spirit. Rest in peace.
