Deborah Smith Hughes, 70, of Salisbury, passed away Friday, August 31, 2018 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury, NC. Born on May 24, 1948, she was the daughter of Mary Ruth Coley (nee Bost) and step-daughter of Walter Coley.
Debby attended Boyden High School and studied at John A. Logan College. She worked as a stewardess, a journalist, served as an officer with the Salisbury Police Department, and was a production operator at Hoechst Celanese. After retiring, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing from UNC Greensboro. Debby loved animals and was a talented artist and writer. Her novel, Winter White, was published in 2008.
Debby was preceded in death by her step-father, Walter Coley, and a host of beloved cats and dogs. She is survived by her mother, Mary Ruth Coley of Salisbury, NC, brother John Smith (Gigi) of Statesville, NC, daughter Jennifer L. Hughes and granddaughter Vivienne of Florence, KY, daughter Lauren English (Mark) and granddaughter Emily of Hebron, KY, and her faithful dogs Nikki and Jack.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Maupin Avenue Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, NC.
