Dolan Ray Hinson, 79, of Albemarle, passed away peacefully on Monday December 5, 2016 at the W. G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, surrounded by family. Dolan was born on July 27, 1937 to the late Fred R. Hinson and Mary Hahn Hinson. Dolan proudly served his country as a young adult in the United States Army.
Dolan retired from UNC-Charlotte as an Associate Professor in 1999, where he taught accounting and finance courses for more than 30 years. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Pfeiffer College, MBA from New York University while working for Chase Manhattan Bank and his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He was a scholar who believed in life-long learning and instilled this in his family and many students over the years. Retirement from academia did not deter this love of learning and writing. He continued to pursue learning and self-education up to his demise. In addition to scholarly activities Dolan loved the outdoors and, over the years, could be found either in his garden or at Quail Cove development in Haywood County, NC, which he co-purchased and developed.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Dolan Ray Hinson II, sisters Ruby Pickler and Ruth Poplin and brother, James Hinson.
He is survived by his daughter, Yvonne Leigh Hinson and husband Charles Bamford of Durham; a grandson, Sean David Stewart of Durham, brothers Max, Robert and Hugh Hinson, step-grandson Robert Bamford and wife Jane, step-granddaughter Ada Young and husband Andrew, three step-great grandchildren, and his many nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends who meant so much to him throughout his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 10th, 2016 at Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Albemarle, NC. The service will be conducted by Pastor Brad Hinton. Military Honors will be provided by the North Carolina National Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stand Up To Cancer (standup2cancer.org) or the David Hinson Foundation c/o Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 28766 Hwy 24/27, Albemarle, NC 28001.
Carolina Cremation of Salisbury is serving the Hinson family. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinacremation.com.
Joyce Efird Westbrook says
I was so sorry to hear from two NC friends today regarding the death of Dolan!
Dolan was a distant cousin with whom I (as well as my deceased husband, Jack A. Westbrook) went to Endy School with from grades 1 to 12.
It was always delightful catching up with each other at our combined class reunions! He will be missed!
My prayers are with Dolan’s family at this time!
