Doris JoAnn Barton, 77, of Salisbury, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 in Salisbury.
She was born September 1, 1945 in Eagle Rock, VA to the late Joseph Johnson Sr. and Dorothy Nininger Johnson.
Doris, who always wanted to be called JoAnn, was married to Hoyt Barton in 1963 in Roanoke, VA. She worked various jobs from plant/mill work to secretarial but one of her favorites was Tinnell’s Finer Foods in Roanoke, VA. She raised two daughters while Hoyt drove a truck. In her younger years, she loved traveling to different places, visiting the beach, and bowling in her local league.
She always wanted to go to Ireland on a “Dream Vacation” but never got the chance to go. We heard many stories about her adventures with her best friend of many years, Bertha Blake. In her later years, she enjoyed cooking shows and was inspired to cook many dishes to which she would send home with family and friends. Canning at the right season tomatoes and chow chow was one of her favorite pastimes. She was a wonderful mom and great grammy/moppy and she will be missed by us all.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt Barton; and her brothers, Joseph “Sonny” Johnson Jr., and Roger Lee Johnson.
Doris is survived by her daughters, Lori (Patrick) Wray, and Lisa (Frederick) Wilson; three grandchildren, Steven (Blair) Wray, Kari (Shane) Vanwitzenberg, and Kristen Wilson; seven great grandchildren, Christian, Baily, Zoe, Delainey, Greyson, Abby, and Charlie; a dear sister, Dorothy Robinette of Marion NC, and brothers, Nolan Johnson, Mac Johnson and Lacey Johnson of Roanoke, VA.
Per Doris’ wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House, 1229 Statesville Blvd. Salisbury, NC 28144.
Carolina Cremation of Salisbury and Charlotte is assisting the Barton family. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinacremation.com.
