Dr. Ernest Cleveland Morris, 92, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, January 14, 2015 at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.
Ernest was born June 10, 1922 in Belmont, NC, son of the late Harve Cleveland and Margaret Walker Morris. He received an undergraduate degree from Mars Hill University and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from Emory University in Atlanta. After serving as a dentist in the Navy during World War II, Ernest joined his brother Donald in dental practice in Charlotte until retirement in the 1980s. Following active service, he remained a member of the Naval Reserve, retiring as Commander of his unit.
In Charlotte, Ernest met his wife Jayne, whom he loved and cherished, and with whom he raised five daughters. He remained Jayne’s devoted husband, and assumed the role of caregiver during her later years. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed surf fishing at the Outer Banks and car trips with family. Always fun-loving, he found few occasions inappropriate for brightening spirits with a good laugh.
Ernest was preceded in death by his wife, Jayne Anderson Morris, brother, Dr. Donald W. Morris, sisters, Virginia Beason and Mary Waldrop, and eldest daughter, Laura Dockery. He is survived by four daughters – Linda (Bob) Miller of Pinehurst, Leslie Morris of Asheville, Leigh (Mike) Travis of Morristown, TN, and Louise (David) Flittner of Yorktown, VA – and a son-in-law, William H. Dockery of Las Vegas, NM. Additionally, he is survived by six grandchildren – Arlissa (Alan) Vaughn of Murphy, NC, Zoë (Johnny) Scroggs of Warne, NC, Adam Travis of Pittsburgh, PA, Chloe and Henry Travis of Morristown TN, and Daniel Flittner of Yorktown, VA, two great grandchildren, Estelle Vaughn and Abram Scroggs, a nephew and four nieces, and special friend Lillie Buff of Charlotte.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 7th at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Road, in Charlotte, NC. A reception will follow in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Western Carolina, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215, or, Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte, 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.

To all my Cousins. So sorry to hear of your Dad passing. I always had fond recollections of getting together with you, your Mom and Dad at your house so many years ago. They were always a highlight of our visits to see Nana. I recall your dad being quiet, kind and witty. I’m sure you all will miss him.
Love, Jeff G.

I knew Dr. Morris through his oldest daughter, Laura. He was a fine man, and I hope to see him and Laura again (John 11: 25).
