Frank Hammar Smith, 88, of Concord, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, surrounded by family, at Carolinas HealthCare System Northeast.
He was born June 10, 1930 in Milwaukee, WI to the late Milton Smith and Elsie Thompson Smith. He proudly served in the United States Army and graduated from Iowa State in 1952.
He was employed at Metrolina Greenhouse for over 20 years and in his spare time volunteered at Carolinas HealthCare System Northeast.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Farrell; and brother, Robert M. Smith (Betty).
Frank is survived by his 7 children, Tim Smith (Wendy) of Chapel Hill; Dean Smith of Spokane, WA; Margaret Lebo of Charlottesville, VA; Peter Smith (Anne) of Virginia Beach, VA; Curt Smith (Crystal) of China Grove, NC; Kathy Horsley (Bill) of Concord, NC; Tricia Davis (John) of Hilton Head, SC; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.
There will be a private memorial service held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Ln, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Frank and I worked together at NE for many years. He was fun to volunteer with and always willing to do more than required at the VS. He will be missed by all the volunteers at NE.

Thinking of all my cousins with love and fond memories of our childhood back in Charlottesville. Times were simpler then and the Smith families shared many family holidays together with Grandma Elsie. Rest In Peace Uncle Frank. ❤️
