George Lee Mathews, 74, of Salisbury, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at his home surrounded by family. He was born June 17, 1944 in Concord, NC to the late Melvin Fisher and Sarah Hicks Fisher. George proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and United States Army. He served during Vietnam and was twice awarded the Purple Heart for his service and was a expert rifleman.
George worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department until his retirement. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, deer hunting, and fishing. George attended First Christian Church of Salisbury and he loved spending time with his family and friends.
George is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rosemary Mathews; two daughters, Michelle (Grant) Merchant of Clarksville, TN; and Melissa McArver of Salisbury; a son, Michael Lee (Stacie) Mathews of Charlotte; a brother, Gene Fisher of Faith; a sister, Loanda Blansett of Cary; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Military Graveside Service will be held on Friday October 26, 2018 at 9:00 AM at the Salisbury National Cemetery (501 Statesville Blvd, Salisbury, NC 28144). Military honors will be provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and North Carolina National Guard.
