Georgia Ann Murphy 02/22/1947 – 10/01/2023
Georgia was born to Jeanne Ann (Murphy) Burton and Lewis Murphy in Indianapolis, Ind. She graduated from Blytheville High School in Blytheville, AR as salutatorian and, being creative and artistic, attended Memphis Academy of Arts in Memphis, TN.
She received a bachelor’s degree from Memphis State University (now University of Memphis) and master’s and doctoral degrees in applied psychology from NYU. She worked as a statistician for NINEX (New York Bell) and after moving back to Memphis to care for her mother, held positions as software designer and accountant for a CPA firm.
Georgia never married and as a young Catholic woman considered becoming a nun. Always involved in the Church community, she taught children’s catechism classes and was president of a lay women’s organization. She gave selflessly of her time to her nephews, brothers, sister and step-mother in times of need and was always ready to take a canoe or rafting trip.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Michael; and nephews, Jake and Gabe.
She is survived by her sister and caregiver, Pam Clarke of Lexington, NC; brothers Patrick Murphy (Jessica) of Springdale, AR, and Gerald Murphy of Drummonds, TN; nephews, Ryan Murphy and Nick Maese-Murphy; nieces, Stephanie Williamson and Elizabeth Quesenberry; half-sister, Dawn; four step-sisters and grandniece Gabriella.
Donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association, Catholic Relief Services or Human Kindness Foundation.
Carolina Cremation of Salisbury and Charlotte is assisting the Murphy family. Online condolences may be made at www.carolinacremation.com.
