Henry C Stokes, III died on July 5, 2014 after a brave fight with cancer where he always had hope for the future. He was born on December 26, 1953 the son of Henry C. and Lois A. Stokes who preceded him in death.
In his youth he played many sports and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Henry was a graduate of East Carolina University and enjoyed following their sports teams. He retired from the NC State Park System, serving at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, Pettigrew State Park, Kerr Lake State Recreational Area, and Dismal Swamp State Park. He enjoyed golf and fishing in his retirement years and was proud of making a hole-in-one four times. In recent years, he appreciated the fellowship of being a Mason. He was a member of Hertford United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a sister, Suzanne Niver, and husband Mike of Lexington, NC. Nephews, Will Niver of Durham and Michael Niver of Chapel Hill; a stepmother, Bettie Stokes of Colfax, NC; stepsisters Caroline Burnett of Santa Fe, NM Chris Cordell (Joe) of Tampa, FL Betsy James (John) of Richmond, VA stepbrother Joe Weatherly (Mitzi) of Greensboro, NC and an aunt, Mae Edla Shaw of Mebane and several cousins.
Henry was blessed with many friends who stood by him during his illness. He was thankful every day for their support that allowed him to live at home as long as he did. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Davidson County and Duke Cancer Center for their excellent care.
A Memorial Service will be held at Hertford United Methodist Church at 1 PM on Friday, July 11, 2014. The family will receive friends at the family home at 218 N Front Street, Hertford from 6-8 Thursday July 10 and immediately following the service.

I was a high school classmate of Henry. There were times we played together at his family’s home on the water facing the Perquimans River. He was a good guy, and I’m sorry we’ve lost him.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Henry’s death. My family sends its condolences to you. I will be unable to attend Henry’s service, which I regret, but I will be in Elizabeth City at my father’s house on Saturday and early Sunday.
