James Gray “Jim” McLoughlin passed away in Charlotte, NC on January 30, 2018 at the age of 91. Jim was born on May 6, 1926 in Utica, New York to the late Gray McLoughlin and Jane Davies McLoughlin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ernestine “Ernie Lou” McLoughlin.
He is survived by his brother Donald McLoughlin of Clinton, NY. After moving to Rome, NY as a small child, he was valedictorian of his high school class at Rome Free Academy and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering. Jim served in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve from 1943 until 1966, achieving the rank of Lt. Commander. He first worked for DuPont and then for Celanese, moving several times until settling in Charlotte in 1972, and retiring in 1986. He assisted with tax preparation for seniors through AARP and volunteered at the Independence branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library well into his 80s. Jim enjoyed researching family genealogy and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
During his life he refined his taste for fine wine and food. He and Ernie Lou traveled throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, visiting wineries that produced some of his favorite wines. Jim was always happy to share his knowledge of wine with anyone and everyone. Known for his quick wit and extensive vocabulary, he was never at a loss for words.

Jim and I worked together for Celanese in Rock Hill, SC. Jim was one of the first people I met from the Rock Hill facility. I always enjoyed his company and his expertise in wine. Good Memories. I am sure he will be missed by many.
