John Charles Hamm, 78, of Lexington, passed away on Tuesday April 27, 2016 at the Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington surrounded by family. Mr. Hamm was born on February 13, 1938 in Ashe County, NC to the late Carl Vence Hamm and Bessie Elliott Hamm. John proudly served his country in the United States Navy and then he joined the reserves after two years in the Navy.
John attended Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington and retired from United Plywood as a Purchasing Agent after 18 years of employment. He loved to ride his road bike and was always exercising whether it be on his bike, running, or hiking. John had a contagious personality and was always picking with and making his friends and family laugh. Going on trips, especially the annual family beach vacation was something that he looked forward to every year. John was married to the love of his life, Greta and his daughter Marianna was the apple of his eye and he made sure everyone knew that his family came first.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Joe Hamm and Kenneth Harrison Hamm; and a sister, JoAnn Hamm.
John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Greta Walser Hamm of Lexington; a son, David Elliott Hamm of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Marianna Frank and husband Thomas of Lexington; a brother, James Ralph Hamm and wife Sybil of Lexington; a granddaughter, Mariah Hamm of Lexington.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday April 30, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Second Presbyterian Church (200 Cotton Grove Rd., Lexington, NC 27292) conducted by Pastor Brian Rummage. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:45 PM prior to the service at the church. Military Honors will be provided by the NC National Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
