Jose “Chein” Damaso Garcia, 61, of Newark, NJ passed away on Sunday August 10, 2014 at Carolinas Medical Center Northeast in Concord. Mr. Garcia was born January 24, 1953 in Havana Cuba, to the late Jose Garcia and Lilia Alonso.
Chein was a life-long songwriter and composer. He wrote hit songs for the Latin market such as “Bailando”, “Tu Me Vulves Loco”, and “Experiencia Religiosa”. His songs were performed by well known musicians, such as Enrique Iglesisas, Jose Feliciano, Boys II Men, Thalia, and Carlos Santana.
He won eight ASCAP music awards and a Latin Grammy. Chein received the key to the City of Newark, NJ where he resided most of his life after leaving Cuba. Chein also held a PHD from Rutgers University in Spanish Literature where he also taught for many years.
Chein is survived by his wife of 24 years, Lourdes Martinez Garcia; a son, Fabio Hurtado and wife Teresita of Concord, NC; a brother, Josse Garcia of Newark, NJ; grandchildren, Krystin, Francis, Elisa, Matthew, Joseph, Rebecca, and Grace; and a great grandchild, Damian.
There will be a Memorial Mass on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 3:00 PM at the St. James Greater Catholic Church in Concord, NC conducted by Father Geiger.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the Cathedral Basilica of The Sacred Heart in Newark, NJ.
