Linda Cline Riley, 86, of Gold Hill passed away peacefully on March 17th, 2024. Born 1937 in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Evelina Cline of Gold Hill.
She was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Pfeiffer College. She taught History and Physical Education for the NC school system until moving to Florida to pursue her teaching career. In Florida, she met U.S. Navy Capt. Roy “Luke” Riley and they were married in 1974 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
After living at submarine bases in Hawaii and Guam, she resided in Manassas, Virginia where her passion for art became a small business named “Rags to Rugs”, producing textiles from recycled and natural materials, as well as pottery, painting and mixed media artwork. Upon returning to Gold Hill in 1987, she continued her textile business and was known throughout the community for her incredible organic vegetable and flower gardens. Always a proponent of shelter pet adoption, she provided a home for multiple dogs over the years.
She leaves behind her son, Dr. Lance Riley and daughter-in-law, Tara Riley, of Gold Hill, NC; sister, Peggy Green of Cape Canaveral, FL as well as a multitude of family and friends.
A private service will be held to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers or cards, her family is asking for donations to the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter, the donation phone number is 704-920-3288.

Lance, you were just such a magically wonderful son, and did so many beautiful things for your mother over the course of your lifetime, and so much more even in her last year’s. Tara, you have been a beautiful and an amazing daughter-in-law. I did not know your mother, Lance, personally, but I see her in you, and the beautiful and talented person she was, is a big part the wonderful man you’ve become! Her legacy lives on.
