Robert Mack (Bob) Russell, 85, of Statesville, passed away on Monday December 19, 2016 at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville surrounded by his family. Bob was born on July 16, 1931 in Clover, SC to the late Robert Carson Russell and Lula Bell Deal Russell. After graduating from Cannon High School in Kannapolis, Mr. Russell proudly served as an Aviation Machinist Mate in the United States Navy where he received an Honorable Discharge in 1953. He then attended college at Gardner Webb and went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina.
Bob, and his wife Betty, moved to Statesville in 1960. Once in Statesville he worked in the finance business, the real estate business and jewelry business. He also served as the exalted ruler of the Statesville Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and was active with the Jaycees. He enjoyed photography, watching football, boating, flying private aircraft, as well as, vacationing in Charleston, SC.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Hilburn Russell of Statesville; two sons, Sam Russell (Leah) of Statesville and Robert Russell of Denver, NC; a daughter, Julie Russell Taylor of Roanoke, VA.; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A Military Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at 2 PM at the Old Salisbury National Cemetery (202 Government Rd., Salisbury, NC 28144). Military Honors will be provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Navy.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to The Gordon Hospice House C/O Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County at 2347 Simonton Rd, Statesville, NC 28625.
