Stephen “Steve” E Mahler, 75, of Saltville, VA, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2025 at home surrounded by family.
Born August 27, 1950 in Elkhart, IN, he was the son of the late Calvin Eugene Mahler of Goshen, IN and Nola Henderson Aistrop of Salisbury, NC. Also preceding him in death, his sister, Pamela Aistrop.
Stephen was of the Christian faith. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, racing, football (Dallas Cowboys), Ford trucks, and dogs. Most of all he loved his beloved dogs Doodle Bug and Rebel.
Those left to cherish his memory are his brother, Ken Aistrop of Salisbury, NC; two sisters, Deborah Mahler Ramsey and Robbin Aistrop, both of Denton, NC; also his two bonus children, Sharon Lopez and Marco Lopez; and his grandson, Trey Lopez of Florida.
Early in life, Stephen lived in several states. He found his place in the mountains of Saltville, Virginia by the Holston River, which will be his final resting place.

So sorry to hear about Steve “FLATLANDER” I really enjoyed sitting on the front porch WQUT in the back ground, down on the river listening to his stories of growing up and back packing the journeys he has taken… He loved his Doodle-Bug, and Lander I guess they finally built that mansion across the river…you’ll be missed… Love Trish & Kevin
